Decameron

Il Decameron ebbe subito un gran successo fra i lettori: andò a ruba, come mostra questa piccola lettera ansiosa, scritta nel luglio del 1360 da Francesco Buondelmonti all’arcivescovo Giovanni Acciaioli a Firenze:

“Domine reverende, ecco che il Montebellandi scrive alla moglie che vi dia il libro delle novelle di messer Giovanni Boccacci, il quale libro è mio, sicché vi priego quantum possum che ve lo facciate donare; e se l’arcivescovo di Napoli non è partito vi priego il mandiate per lui, cioè per li suoi camerieri, e che non lo desse né a Messere né a nullo se non a me. E se l’arcivescovo è partito fatelovi dare Cenni Bardella: lo mi mandi a l’Aquila, o a Sulmona, o voi me lo mandiate per chi pare a voi, che venga in mia mano; e guardate non venga a mano a messer Neri, perché non l’avrei. Io il vi fo dare a voi, perché mi fido più che di nullo altro e hollo caro: e guardate di non prestarlo a nullo, perché molti ne sareno malcortesi… E guardatevi del libro mio di prestarlo a ser Nicolò, però ch’egli vi sarà ladro.”

La citazione suggerisce il carattere che ebbe l’immensa popolarità di questo libro: “cento novelle raccontate in diece giorni da un’onesta brigata di sette donne e di tre giovani”, come dice l’autore. Una popolarità costruita semplicemente sull’entusiasmo dei comuni lettori. Non vi furono altre opere medievali europee che, come questa, varcassero in breve ogni frontiera, amorevolmente tradotte perché chiunque potesse averne diletto; senza contare le imitazioni che seguirono nel tempo. E ben altro che imitazioni: è il Decameron a inaugurare quella narrativa – non più epica, o di exemplum, o di fantasia remota, ma di attualità e di storia attualizzata – che poi caratterizzò le letterature occidentali fino ad oggi..."
